He who stands on tiptoe is not steady. He
who strides forward does not go.
He who shows himself is not luminous. He who
justifies himself is not prominent.
He who boasts of himself is not given
credit. He who brags does not endure for long.
From the point of view of Tao, these are
like remnants of food and tumours of action, which all creatures detest.
Therefore those who possess Tao turn away from them.
(Tao Te Ching, 24)
Today, I would try to interpret
the above text which is translated by Wing-Tsit Chan.
In the above text, it can be
understood that the person who has known the Tao is like the Tao. He does not
force things and he is not boastful. The person who possesses the Tao does not
follow the Tao because he wanted to be known or famous. He does this because he
thinks that this is the right thing to do. The one who possesses the Tao does
not satisfy his desires he has it because of pure intention not for anything
else.
